Eco Conscience
The Monterey Music Summit strives to be a 100% carbon neutral event. Greening expert Kristin Cushman of The Offset Project has orchestrated partnerships with environmentally progressive organizations such as Monterey Salinas Transit, Passion Purveyors and Pure Water. 2007 Carbon Footprint
The Monterey Music Summit worked this year toward minimizing its overall carbon footprint by focusing on areas such as waste diversion, vendor product usage and supporting local and sustainable industries.
While 5778 lbs of waste was collected throughout the event, roughly 50% of that waste was diverted from landfills through recycling. An estimated 1,140 plastic bottles avoided the waste stream all together due to our Purified Water campaign.
Green organizers tried to minimize waste from the sale of plastic water bottles and packaging from vendors. Vendors were offered a 20% rebate if they used biodegradable service ware and cut down on their water bottle sales. As an alternative, Monterey Music Summit provided five water dispensers throughout the event to encourage people to use their own Nalgene bottles or purchase one from the event. 180 Nalgene bottles were also given to the band members in hopes they would embrace our campaign, act as a visual reminder onstage and reduce their use of bottled water. Other efforts were made to minimize the carbon footprint and maintain a sustainable event. All the food provided for the backstage area was all locally grown organic foods. Event t-shirts were organic and marketing materials used TreeFree products and sustainable inks when available.
Monterey Music Summit stage events emitted an average of 4212 pounds of carbon while transportation for the shows generated about 428,396 pounds. Other calculations included marketing and vendor participation. In order to offset these emissions, 703 trees were planted in Monterey County, keeping with our local and sustainable theme.
